Set up your Inactive Account Manager

Set up the Inactive Account Manager to give someone access to your Google Account after it becomes inactive. Making a long-term plan for your data ensures the safety of your information.

Features are subject to availability. The steps may look different depending on your device.

  • Get to know Inactive Account Manager

Inactive Account Manager is a way for users to share parts of their account data or notify someone if they’ve been inactive for a certain period of time. In the event of your death, this feature helps manage your digital inheritance, so your information and assets are taken care of.

Your account is considered inactive if you have not signed in or used Gmail or other Google tools for a length of time that you choose.

  • How to set it up

To plan what happens to your data if you can’t use your Google Account anymore, go to myaccount.google.com/inactive.

Here, you’ll decide when Google should consider your account to be inactive and what we do with your data afterwards. You can share your data with someone you trust or ask Google to delete it.

  • What to expect

Once the specified period of inactive time has passed, you’ll be alerted before the account access is sent to your contact, in case you change your mind.

Then, your contact will get an email with a subject line and content that you wrote during setup. It will include a footer explaining that you've instructed Google to send an email on your behalf after you've stopped using your account.

Your contact will be given a list of the data they can view and steps to take to access your account.
