Set up password manager

Set up Password Manager through Google to protect and store all of your passwords, and even get recommendations on passwords you should change to keep your account secure.

Features are subject to availability. The steps may look different depending on your device.

  1. Step 1 of 9

Stolen passwords are one of the most common ways accounts are compromised, so it’s important to take steps to protect yours.

Google’s Password Manager generates unique, strong passwords, stores them securely, and even remembers them for you. Password Manager also recommends which passwords to update if they are weak or potentially accessed by a third party. It will also verify the authenticity of a website before it fills in the password.

  2. Step 2 of 9

To get started with Google’s Password Manager, you’ll need to turn on Sync in Google Chrome. To start, open Chrome and at the top right, tap More .

Important: Only turn on Chrome sync with devices you own. If you're using a public computer, use guest mode instead.

  3. Step 3 of 9

    Tap Settings.

  4. Step 4 of 9

Choose the Google Account you want to use. Tap Continue.

  5. Step 5 of 9

To turn on sync, tap Yes, I’m in.

Your passwords will be available to you everywhere you sign in, as long as the browser you’re using has sync turned on. Chrome will autofill your passwords, but if you use a different browser, you can find your passwords at passwords.google.com after completing set up.

Tip: If you’re using more than one Google Account on your device, you’ll be asked whether to delete existing data, or combine the data of your accounts. Select one and tap Continue.

  6. Step 6 of 9

Under “You and Google”, you’ll find that Sync is now set to “On”.

    Under “Basics” tap Passwords.

  7. Step 7 of 9

Here you can review your Passwords settings. “Save passwords” is set to “On”, as is “Auto Sign-in”, which helps Chrome sign you in to websites using stored credentials.

Go to “View and manage saved passwords in your Google Account” and tap the link.

Tip: If you’re using a new Google Account and have not yet saved any passwords, this screen will look different. Continue to use Chrome so you can begin saving passwords.

  8. Step 8 of 9

Password Manager is now active in your Google Account. Tap Get started.

  9. Step 9 of 9

From here, you can review and manage your passwords.

Tip: Now that Password Manager has been set up, you can access it from your Google Account home screen. At the top, tap Security and scroll to find Password Manager.
